The End Begins for Rainbow Six

Ubisoft is in the midst of hyping it's newest Tom Clancy title End War which appears to include an effort to give characters from all the Clancy game franchises a cameo appearance. Here's a short story that gives us a peek into how Team Rainbow ties in.
For what it's worth, it seems to me that whoever wrote this story didn't care to pay much attention to what happened in the novels and previous games. Older fans will notice lots of glaring inconsistencies like:Logan was not on the team when Dieter Weber was rescued in Lockdown.Half of team Rainbow wasn't blown up, it was a Russian Spetznaz team in The Bear and the Dragon novel.Team members like Arnavisca and Haider would be almost 50 years-old by 2019. Why are they still around if Ding Chavez is already no longer a field operative?Fred Franklin has never previously appeared in any of the games, just in the novel.

No More Hardcore Rainbow Six

Old-school R6 fans have been grumbling with good reason the past few years about the direction Ubisoft has taken the Rainbow Six series that strays so far from its original gameplay. Well, this recent blog post at Wired confirms that it is indeed a very conscious business decision. The article quotes Ubisoft Game Designer Philippe Therien:"I doubt we will ever go back to really hardcore only shooters. The market was too narrow for it to be a viable business choice. We would like to be able to please both sides but compromises have to be made" You can read the full text of the chat with Philippe Therien here from earlier this year.

BlackFoot Studios has announced the title of its first game that has been generating huge excitement in the squad-based tactical gaming community: Ground Branch. Here's a snippet from the synopsis:Ground Branch is the premiere title from Blackfoot Studios. The term Ground Branch is a little known Military and Intelligence reference phrase for the paramilitary wing of the CIA.
These teams are not constrained by the law of land warfare that applies to military units. They operate under the radar and outside public knowledge, often conducting operations in conjunction with Special Operations Forces. Their members are drawn from the best former SOF operators from around the world including US Army Special Forces, British SAS, Australian SAS, Navy SEALs, Delta Force, and GSG9 just to name a few. Find out more information about the game at BlackFoot Studio's Ground Branch forums!

Long-time R6/GR community members are familiar with John Sonedecker as he served as an artist on the first two Rainbow games, and was Lead Artist/Level Designer for GR1 and SOAF.
John struck out on his own and formed a new company in 2004 called BlackFoot Studios, a company dedicated to the absolute best in squad-based tactical gaming. In the past few years, his studio has been concentrating on outsourcing art and programming work to some well-known clients.
Recently, some "teasers" about BFS' latest project have appeared at GR.net. For fans of (especially old-school) R6/GR games, this is probably the most exciting news in years. As of today, the official BlackFoot Studios forums are open and fans should check them out often for more information relating to the studio and what they are up to!

Editor's Note: You can download bigbluesoul's Capitol mod at our File Retreat mirror here.
Well, at last I finished it. The last map is here. My personal objective of making all the missing classic Rainbow Six maps for Rogue Spear is completed. It's been one and a half hard years but I'm very happy now!
The last one, Capitol is now available for downloading at www.bigbluesoul.com. Also available is the "Eagle Watch shell" (like the "Classic shell") which includes the intro and final movies, credits, and menu backgrounds.
I will soon put all the EW maps together and release the campaign, and that will be all my contributions to Rogue Spear. I think it's time to start new projects now. Hope you enjoy them!!

The R6 campaign for RS installer has been updated up to version 0.6 at www.bigbluesoul.com . This is not a patch, you will have to download all the installer again. This update includes: - Fixed Lone Wolf missions and added 3 more. - Now R6:UO supports fog, so you can activate "show fog" option in options/advanced menu to see this effect in some missions. Try it, some of the maps are great with fog on! - R6:UO accepts EAX sound effects in all missions. - Fixed some map buggs & textures in CL01 Embassy map. - Fixed some map buggs & textures in CL05 Water Ride map, exterior has been modified also for a bit more ambiance. - Fixed some map buggs in CL06 Dam and some texture materials, now you can see steam from the pipes when you shot at them! - Added rainy weather in ship mission. - Fixed crash in CL11 State Easy mode mission.

I have tried to fix as many map bugs as possible, but some of them are still there. If you know any map bug that you really want to be fixed just write me with the details about it.
At the download section you will also find an update to version 5.5 with only the CL11 bug fix.

R6: Vegas 360 Demo Released!

The R6: Vegas demo is out in the wild! It was released yesterday on Xbox Live to the rest of the world outside of the US. Apparently, if you live in the US, you can get your hands on the R6: Vegas demo through Official Xbox Magazine's coverdisc...and their temporary exclusive hold on the title (something the boys over at Penny Arcade don't seem too happy about).
Anyway, it's out there one way or another for you Rainbow fans. I just got my hands on it so far it feels good. No, it's not the good old Original Rainbow Six (for better or for worse), but it also can't be in today's market. I encourage all of you with a 360 to give it a try and then come comment on our forums.

Thanks to GiWeDa for posting that the Lockdown patch details have been made public at the Ubi.com forums. Check out the full list here. No release date for the patch has been announced yet.
The best thing I see in the list is "Added direct connect to server command line option". If this means we can host games without Ubi.com, it could be the catalyst Lockdown multiplayer desperately needs to unlock its potential.

R6 & Rogue Spear Support Ending at MSN Games

Thanks to George for sending in the news that MSN Games (previously known as the "Zone" to all you old schoolers) is officially ending support for the original Rainbow Six and Rogue Spear games as of June 19, 2006.
Editorial: I remember many good games on the Zone way back when (before rampant cheating), and it was great to have the choice of direct IP, the Zone, GameSpy etc. for online multiplayer instead of the current situation of being limited to Ubi.com ... which IMHO is one of the major reasons that has lead to the early demise of Lockdown PC.

Although Matrox has been pretty much out of the gaming video card market for years, they have an interesting new product that will appeal to some sim enthusiasts. SimHQ has a good review of Matrox's new TripleHead2Go technology, which basically lets you use 3 monitors together. Raven Shield is one of the games that can take advantage of this new graphics chip. Check out the article for some very cool screenshots.
Yes, this is 3072x768 resolution across 3 monitors

Those of you who have finished Lockdown PC may have noticed images of Team Rainbow members wearing brand-name military gear in the credits section. These images are based on actual kit/gear that military operators use today.
Red Storm's Authenticity Coordinator, Travis Getz, has done a phenomenal job building contacts with military industry suppliers to make sure the gear in Lockdown looks as authentic as possible. See this video for more info about the kind of effort RSE puts in to ensure authenticity in their games!
